On 30 November 2024, selected representatives of the State Customs Service of Ukraine (SCS) successfully completed professional training on Microsoft Power Business Intelligence tools and were awarded certificates. The course was provided for by the EU-funded EU4IBM-Resilience project and delivered by experts from the Educational Centre of Innovation.

From 16 October to 15 November 2024, a total of 32 officers from various SCS departments participated in this programme which aimed to improve their practical skills in analysing and visualising data and optimising operational efficiency in customs processes through the use of business intelligence. Across public and private sectors worldwide, BI tools currently help handle large amounts of structured and unstructured data allowing for the easy interpretation of these big data and helping identify and develop a wide range of management and governance decisions ranging from operational to strategic level.

The delivered course programme was developed with the needs and requirements of SCS personnel in mind. This activity also aligned with the Project’s broader goal of supporting Ukraine in implementing reforms in border management procedures. Furthermore, the training course responded to the SCS’s request for access to sophisticated data analysis tools with a particular focus on enhancing risk assessment and operational decision-making capabilities.

The training addressed several key topics, including data modelling, utilisation of advanced formulas and creation of complex reports. Participants also learned to identify patterns and anomalies in customs processes, thus enabling faster and more informed management decisions to be made.

Vyacheslav Toporov, the EU4IBM-Resilience Manager, commented: “Our objective is to provide practical hands-on assistance for the modernisation of Ukraine’s border management. The project ensured that the training was delivered by competent experts and in line with the requirements specified by the Ukrainian partners to instantaneously enhance the analytical capabilities of the State Customs Service.”

To earn their certificates, participants were required to complete a series of tasks assigned by the lecturers. The newly acquired skills and knowledge will help officers from across the State Customs Service to streamline data analysis in various sectors and to contribute to enhanced decision-making based on data.
