On 15–16 October 2025, a representative of the European Union visited several key border crossing points (BCPs) in the Lviv region as part of the EU Support to Strengthening Integrated Border Management in Ukraine – Resilience (EU4IBM-Resilience) project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

The monitoring visit provided an opportunity to observe how EU-funded equipment and infrastructure are being used in daily operations at some of Ukraine’s busiest border crossings.

Massimo Prozzo, recently appointed Sector Manager on Migration and Integrated Border Management at the EU Delegation to Ukraine, together with Liia Rida, Project Officer of EU4IBM-Resilience, met with representatives of Lviv Customs and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS). During the meetings, the parties discussed ongoing challenges, operational improvements, and the impact of the EU’s support on the efficiency of border management. Acting Head of Lviv Customs Ivan Kerezvas and the heads of customs posts briefed the visitors on coordination between customs and border guards, as well as the use of modern technical equipment installed under the project.

Over two days, Mr Prozzo visited the Krakivets–Korczowa, Shehyni–Medyka, Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne, and Nyzhankovychi–Malhowice BCPs. At the Krakivets, Shehyni, and Rava-Ruska crossings, the visitors observed how mobile and stationary cargo scanners, handheld X-ray systems, and vehicle weighing complexes supplied through the project help speed up inspection procedures while maintaining a high level of control. Customs and border guard officers demonstrated how these technologies are used to detect illicit goods and streamline clearance processes for carriers.

“The modern equipment provided by the European Union has significantly improved the speed and reliability of customs checks,” noted Ivan Kerezvas, adding that innovations such as a dedicated lane for empty trucks at the Rava-Ruska crossing have eased congestion and improved the overall experience for drivers.

Throughout the visit, discussions focused on identifying further needs for infrastructure development and operational support, particularly in view of the growing traffic at Ukraine’s western borders. The meetings reaffirmed the EU’s continued commitment to assisting Ukraine in building a resilient, transparent, and efficient border management system in line with European standards.
